Nizhny Novgorod Residents Invited to Decipher a Late-19th-Century Postcard at a Workshop

The official website of the Nizhny Novgorod City Administration announced a workshop titled “A Journey Through Postcards” at the V. V. Mayakovsky Library. Timur Khusyainov, head of the “From Nizhny with Love...” project, was to introduce participants to the history of postcards and postal communication in Russia and guide them in deciphering postcards dating from 1880 to 1917. The publication is directly connected with the study of postal heritage and hands-on work with historical postcards.
The official website of the Nizhny Novgorod City Administration reported on the “A Journey Through Postcards” workshop scheduled to take place at the V. V. Mayakovsky Library. The workshop was to be led by Timur Khusyainov, head of the “From Nizhny with Love…” project and a senior lecturer at HSE University — Nizhny Novgorod.
Participants were invited to learn about the history of postcards in Russia, the development of postal communication, notable discoveries and unusual cases. The practical part of the workshop involved deciphering a postcard sent between 1880 and 1917 and discussing the history reflected in its message.
Visitors could also bring pre-revolutionary postcards from family archives and share what they knew about their senders, recipients and subsequent history. This approach is closely related to postal heritage research through the reading, interpretation and historical contextualization of postcards.
