The Advancement of Local Culture, Beauty, and the Commonwealth Era in Postcards
Representations of American Imperialism in Picture Postcards of Manila, 1898-1946 — Cham: Palgrave Macmillan — 2025 — С. 123–141
This chapter references cultural development in Manila, albeit with specific attention to the Manila Carnival. In addition, this chapter references the final phase of American colonization, from 1935 to 1946, known as the Commonwealth Era. Discussion of the major environmental transitions occurring in the Philippine capital city during that time is presented.
Manila, the Tropical Landscape, and the Americanized Cityscape
Representations of American Imperialism in Picture Postcards of Manila, 1898-1946 — Cham: Palgrave Macmillan — 2025 — С. 57–85
This chapter presents a detailed overview of the physical transformation to the built fabric of Manila after American colonization commenced in 1898, e.g., via discussing the 1905 city plan composed by Daniel Burnham. The picture postcards presented in this part of the book reveal the establishment of new public spaces and the construction of new public edifices; in other words, the postcards exhibit a different colonial cityscape than what existed pre-1898. But what exactly was the form of the new urban fabric? How did it symbolize the establishment of “modern Philippine society” under the guidance of the United States?
Images of Spanish Colonial Manila in Early-American Colonial-Era Postcards
Representations of American Imperialism in Picture Postcards of Manila, 1898-1946 — Springer — 2025
This chapter grants the opportunity to recognize and comprehend visual depictions of Manila’s Spanish colonial-era urban environment after the commencement of American colonial rule in 1898. As will be subsequently explained, early-American colonial-era photographic postcards show the Philippine capital city to be an urban place dissimilar to cities in contemporary North America; urban environmental divergence in this context reveals the alleged “backwardness” of Philippine civilization and the lack of modernity in the Philippine capital city.

Conclusion
Representations of American Imperialism in Picture Postcards of Manila, 1898-1946 — Cham: Palgrave Macmillan — 2025 — С. 143–154
The book’s final chapter discusses the environmental condition of Manila at the end of World War Two (WW2), immediately prior to Philippine national independence from the United States (U.S.) in 1946. How much damage did the city experience as a consequence of military conflict during the Japanese Occupation? This chapter also evaluates the significance of picture postcards to the historical study of Manila during this period.
