Exploring the Everyday Life of the Past

The Pochtovoe project offers a thoughtful and in-depth look at everyday life of the past through the lens of postcards — unique artifacts that preserve the living imprint of pre-revolutionary Russia. These postcards allow us to reconstruct not only historical events, but also the texture of daily life: family traditions, emotional bonds, social norms, and cultural practices.

By studying visual imagery and handwritten texts, we discover how people communicated, expressed their feelings, and carefully recorded ordinary moments — whether describing cityscapes, праздники, or personal experiences.

This work is aimed at studying a small fragment of the life of the renowned Soviet and Russian pianist and teacher, laureate of many awards, Honored Artist of the RSFSR and People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Naum Lvovich Shtarkman. The research is based on a postcard sent by the pianist’s father in 1941 to the teacher Iosif Davidovich Glezer, a few days before the beginning of the Battle of Kyiv. The postal message is devoted to the evacuation of the wife and son of L.R. Shtarkman to the Urals.
