Faces of a Bygone Era

Faces of a Bygone Era is a historical and educational community dedicated to preserving and publishing old photographs, particularly images of ordinary people from the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Special attention is given to photographs from family archives, which often remain the only surviving records of the people depicted in them.

Inscribed photographic cards are particularly valuable: dedications, forms of address, and personal messages reveal not only the appearance of people from the past but also the language of everyday communication, emotional ties, and practices of exchanging photographs.

In addition to photographs, the community publishes materials from pre-revolutionary and early Soviet periodicals, historical notes, and other documents from the period. Users are encouraged to submit photographs from their own family archives, allowing the collection to grow through privately held materials.
